The Maxwell James Oskam foundation was established in loving memory of our son Maxwell James Oskam, who passed away suddenly at 3 months old due to complications of a pediatric cancer called Neuroblastoma. Through our heartbreak, we saw firsthand the dire need for change in the world of pediatric cancer. We were distraught to learn how children diagnosed with cancer are forced to undergo treatment that is not tailored to their specific illness. They receive treatment that has not been significantly improved upon in decades, watered-down adult chemotherapy designed to eradicate cancer cells in adults many times their size. Why is this? Because to date, there are currently only four oncology drugs approved for use in pediatric cancer. Four options for dozens of pediatric cancer types with over a hundred subtypes. This, compared to the hundreds of options readily available to adults battling different kinds of cancers. Our eyes were immediately and permanently opened to these harsh realities and to the dire need for change. We know firsthand, that childhood cancer IS NOT RARE. It does not pick, choose, or discriminate. It delivers devastating diagnoses and takes the lives of our children on a daily basis.

We were not able to fight Neuroblastoma with Maxwell, but now we fight it for him. With our mission firmly in place, we are blessed to share that our search has led us to work with an incredible, highly-regarded national organization, Beat Nb. They established a Neuroblastoma research consortium, led by brilliant and innovative physicians, and by joining forces with them, the Maxwell James Oskam foundation is now part of the change and research that has brought a fifth oncology drug (called difluoromethylornithine, or DFMO) to FDA approval in 2020 for use in pediatric cancer. In addition, with the funds that we have raised since our inception in February, 2019, we have proudly awarded $10,000, which will fund five children on a two year clinical trial of this drug, with the goal of the drug assisting in keeping them cancer free for the rest of their life!

We are hosting our 2nd annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser on Sunday, March 22, 2020 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and are seeking sponsors to help us to promote the Maxwell James Oskam Foundation, and our mission to continue to fund ground-breaking Neuroblastoma research and treatment options for children currently battling this horrible disease. Supporting our effort means the world to parents in the pediatric cancer community and gives us the opportunity to fight and make meaningful contributions directly to the researchers on the front line of fighting this disease.
